What Worked? | Problems/Questions that Emerged | Notes for Next Rehearsal |
-worked pg. 78-99 -put it all together | -could not incorporate boundary practice tonight because one actor felt unwell -finding moments of joy and love in the play so the moments of tension and argument feel earned |
Tonight, we finished working through our staging by investigating destination, activities, wants, and allowing new things to emerge. It somewhat dawned on me tonight that part of the reason that I think the actors are having trouble earning what they’re after in the most climactic scenes is that much of our focus during this process has been the moments of tension and argument between the characters, and because of this I think that the other side of that spectrum, the moments of joy, love, and hope have become overshadowed by a mountain of punishing and aiming to hurt each other. In the remaining rehearsals we have, I put the idea in their heads to play with moments where their love for each other shines through and gives them hope. Without that strong foundation of love for each other, it’s hard to justify why they stick together for so long through the hardest parts of their relationship. We still have lots of time to play with this idea and find moments to bring it to life, and I’m willing to bet that after giving those moments some attention, the tense, climactic moments will be much easier for them to earn and play fully.
