What Worked? | Problems/Questions that Emerged | Notes for Next Rehearsal |
-full run | -lack of familiarity with lines hindered their ability to play full out and earn what they’re after -units felt one-note, playing the end of the scene at the beginning -manufacturing the thinking instead of letting the thinking happen authentically | Runtime 95 minutes |
-worked list from pg. 15-41 -preventing them from playing the end of the scene at the beginning freed them of line readings and having nowhere to go -focused on moments of joy and uplifting the other -encouraging them to think the thoughts and not self-generating |
This run was hindered quite a bit by the actors’ unfamiliarity with the lines because they were focused on remembering the lines rather than playing full out and discovering new things in the moment. I gently nudged them to become more familiar with their lines, and I think they will have made progress by tomorrow, since we’re doing another run. Most of the things that needed attention were in the early parts of the script: moments we haven’t covered since our design meeting last week, so I took comfort in that much of the work retained with them over the long-ish period of putting it away. Another thing I noticed was that for some of the longer units where there’s more change in the world, they were playing the actions of the end of the scene at the beginning so that they had nowhere to take the scene. We had time to tackle some of these moments and allow for the actions to develop and allow the thinking to take charge. This was a really productive work session! After pinpointing these issues and working to resolve them, I perceived some authentic thinking and in the moment discoveries. I think if we continue to pair a full run with a work session, we will be on our way to in-depth exploration of all the play’s pivotal moments.
