What Worked?Problems/Questions that EmergedNotes for Next Rehearsal
Staged pg. 21-41-one actor making suggestions about staging to the other
Introduced some rehearsal props to give the actors outer object occupation-hard to balance incorporating props into the work with scripts in hand

In this rehearsal, we were very successful in putting 20 pages of the play on its feet! I’m learning as we’re going along that what we put into the space together isn’t finalized by any means and to be okay with it being a work in progress. I’m prioritizing building a strong foundation with clear destinations and activities. Some moments feel clunky or hard to justify in terms of destination (it looks like I directed them to go to a place and stand there) so I know I have some growth to do in stimulating them to justify movement. I know I also have time to return to these moments and cement them and reestablish what’s going on.

At times, one actor would make suggestions for what the other actor should do or where they should go. It was framed entirely with being helpful, but it was clearly not productive and helpful for the other actor. I knew to nip that in the bud and had a quick chat with them privately during a break about how I appreciate their insight and how I understand they just want to be helpful but that it’s hindering their partner’s ability to work when they do that. It was difficult for me to have that conversation because I didn’t want to discourage them from exploring and making decisions for their own character, but ultimately it was necessary to create a healthy working environment for rehearsals and it was the responsible thing for me to do.
