What a productive rehearsal! We managed to stage the rest of the play, stumble through everything we staged since beginning in the Studio, and begin working through in depth from the beginning! I’m so proud of the actors for their growth, thoughtfulness, and urge to dive in, and I’m proud of myself to making excellent use of our time without rushing or taking shortcuts. Tonight, my preparation was really here for me, and I will try to hold myself to this standard for the rest of our working rehearsals.
We certainly encountered and navigated several challenges. I was having trouble understanding them, so I introduced the idea of linguistic detail as a tool for us to use to remedy the issue clinically. They also had trouble with transitions, so I helped them contextualize the transitions as destinations and part of the action and establish the idea of strategically making noise so not to drown out a line or important moment. I also decided to suck it up and put down spike tape for the future with the idea that it may move and that made them WAY more comfortable with the transitions. I’m not sure what stopped me from doing that… Finally, I encouraged them formally to play full out and think the thoughts they’re having, and I think that was a breakthrough in realizing the circumstance in post-Hush scenes of trying to find the words and selecting the correct ones. From here forward, I anticipate that we will interrogate destinations, activities, connection, wants (and earning them), and breaking line readings.
